Chronicle of the solution: The Shadow of the Seal

Espionage Tier IV

Whoever carried the secrets out no longer walks free. Here, though, is how they were given away, step by step.

The deed, as it was recorded

A spy has crept in among the people of the court, and the realm's secrets have begun flowing toward foreign ears. What has leaked so far is hard to weigh; what might yet leak, impossible. The testimonies keep returning to the same names: Margica the Innkeeper, Brother Anselm, Chancellor Veniamin, Mother Evghenia and Father Nicodim. Motives abound — a debt of honour, revenge, fear of exposure, the inheritance and blackmail — yet only one moved the guilty hand. The threads were tangled on purpose: investigate, weigh every word, and pronounce your verdict only when the grid leaves no room for doubt.

The Chancellery's list held Margica the Innkeeper, Brother Anselm, Chancellor Veniamin, Mother Evghenia and Father Nicodim, none of them further above suspicion than the next.

The evidence gathered on file

Here is the whole file, as the investigator received it. Not one row is spare — it was checked by removing each in turn and watching the unique solution disappear.

  1. An honest-faced witness saw it plainly: the hunting crossbow and the inheritance go together.
  2. Every scout reports the same about the culprit: the culprit was at the castle cellar.
  3. The tracks in the dust do not lie: the queen's garden and fear of exposure go together.
  4. Every scout reports the same about the culprit: the culprit was there at dawn.
  5. The chancellor deduced it coldly: if Father Nicodim was at the tourney field, then the suspect with chestnut hair was driven by revenge.
  6. The chronicler notes drily: the tourney field and a debt of honour go together, whatever the court may say.
  7. The gate guard swears: Father Nicodim handled the amber necklace.
  8. By the order of the hours, first comes Margica the Innkeeper, then Brother Anselm.
  9. A maid whispered it at confession: the amber necklace and a debt of honour go together.
  10. In the Chancellery's ledger it stands in black and white: the inheritance matches that hour: at noon.
  11. An honest-faced witness saw it plainly: the abbey library and revenge go together.
  12. In the Chancellery's ledger it stands in black and white: Chancellor Veniamin was driven by fear of exposure.
  13. Whatever the market gossips: the abbey library and the broken lantern do not go together.
  14. A maid whispered it at confession: the purse of gold coins matches that hour: at vespers.

How the circle closed

No confession was wrung from anyone here. Only the grid was drawn tighter, until nothing but a single name still fitted inside it.

The examination of the place yielded this as well: “An honest-faced witness saw it plainly: the hunting crossbow and the inheritance go together”. From then on that cell could no longer be disputed, and the dispute moved one row down.

The archivist underlined the following line with his nail: “Every scout reports the same about the culprit: the culprit was at the castle cellar”. One attribute of the culprit, no more. Enough, though, to leave on the list only whoever has it.

This particular came to light as well: “The tracks in the dust do not lie: the queen's garden and fear of exposure go together”. The cell filled, and around it a space opened: that is what a certain match does to a grid.

The pages gathered fast, and each cut a strip out of the grid: “Every scout reports the same about the culprit: the culprit was there at dawn”; “The chancellor deduced it coldly: if Father Nicodim was at the tourney field, then the suspect with chestnut hair was driven by revenge”; “The chronicler notes drily: the tourney field and a debt of honour go together, whatever the court may say”; “The gate guard swears: Father Nicodim handled the amber necklace”; “By the order of the hours, first comes Margica the Innkeeper, then Brother Anselm”; “A maid whispered it at confession: the amber necklace and a debt of honour go together”; “In the Chancellery's ledger it stands in black and white: the inheritance matches that hour: at noon”; “An honest-faced witness saw it plainly: the abbey library and revenge go together”; “In the Chancellery's ledger it stands in black and white: Chancellor Veniamin was driven by fear of exposure”. The grid emptied before one's eyes, and what stayed in it could no longer be doubted.

The gate register had kept a trace of its own: “Whatever the market gossips: the abbey library and the broken lantern do not go together”. One more door closed. Investigations are not won on suspicions but on doors closed one at a time.

A report from the watch brought clarity: “A maid whispered it at confession: the purse of gold coins matches that hour: at vespers”. A certain match thus enters the grid, and its row and column empty at once of every other possibility.

The close of the investigation

At the end of the grid one name alone remained: Mother Evghenia. When the deed took place, Mother Evghenia was at the castle cellar, handled the broken lantern, was driven by blackmail and was there at dawn. It was reached only by driving each supposition to its absurd end — a tier IV dossier, and rightly so.

The remaining suspects

The remaining suspects received their release from the grid too: Margica the Innkeeper was at the abbey library, handled the customs scales, was driven by revenge and was there after matins; Brother Anselm was at the old dungeon, handled the hunting crossbow, was driven by the inheritance and was there at noon; Chancellor Veniamin was at the queen's garden, handled the purse of gold coins, was driven by fear of exposure and was there at vespers; Father Nicodim was at the tourney field, handled the amber necklace, was driven by a debt of honour and was there at dusk. Every one of these rows was necessary: take out a single one and the verdict can no longer be demonstrated.

The Chancellery asked nobody to take its word. It showed the road step by step, so that anyone might walk it again.
