Chronicle of the solution: The Knot of the Blazon
Forged decree Tier I
The lying seal has been prised from the hand that pressed it, and the road to that hand is written out below.
The dossier as it reached the desk
A parchment full of orders no one ever gave is circulating through Realm of the Crown, and the harm has only begun. Whoever drew it up knew the Chancellery's ways by heart — and that is precisely what betrays them. The testimonies keep returning to the same names: Gavril the Farrier, Damaschin the Healer and Pantelimon the Gardener. The places named in the testimonies — the old chapel, the merchant's house and the tourney field — each await their turn under scrutiny. Open the grid, weigh every clue, and pronounce your verdict: the Chancellery awaits only your signature.
Called to judgement were Gavril the Farrier, Damaschin the Healer and Pantelimon the Gardener. Each had somewhere to begin a story; one alone had reason to change it.
The suspects
-
Gavril the Farrier
Arms like tree trunks and a forge where all noise dies. Some things are better beaten while hot.
1.88 m tall · dark eyes · black hair · right-handed
-
Damaschin the Healer
He knows the cure for any illness and the dose at which the cure becomes something else. He swears he has never mistaken the dosage.
1.71 m tall · green eyes · grey hair · left-handed
-
Pantelimon the Gardener
He tends the queen's roses and no one's beds of belladonna. The second garden is the more sought-after.
1.73 m tall · green eyes · greying hair · right-handed
Locations
-
The old chapel
Candles, incense, and a silence in which every footstep echoes like a confession.
-
The merchant's house
Carpets brought from overseas and a desk with more secret drawers than drawers.
-
The tourney field
Empty stands outside festival days. An excellent place for meetings that never happened.
The testimonies on file
Nothing is missing from the list and nothing is surplus. Every row below is necessary: without it, the grid would allow several solutions at once.
- Every scout reports the same about the culprit: the culprit was in the place where every footstep echoes like a confession.
- The Chancellery checked twice: the suspect with grey hair never set foot in the merchant's house.
- A maid whispered it at confession: the suspect with dark eyes was in the place with stands empty outside festival days.

How it was unravelled
No confession was wrung from anyone here. Only the grid was drawn tighter, until nothing but a single name still fitted inside it.
The Chancellery asked for one more check, and received it: “Every scout reports the same about the culprit: the culprit was in the place where every footstep echoes like a confession”. The Chancellery learned something about the culprit, but not who they were. The grid did the rest.
The scouts brought their share as well: “The Chancellery checked twice: the suspect with grey hair never set foot in the merchant's house”. The cut named nobody, but it shortened the list of those who could still be named.
The next line was the one that changed the reckoning: “A maid whispered it at confession: the suspect with dark eyes was in the place with stands empty outside festival days”. A pair was tied, and the knot dragged a whole handful of impossibilities after it.
The close of the investigation
At the end of the grid one name alone remained: Damaschin the Healer. At the hour of the deed, Damaschin the Healer was at the old chapel. All of this follows from the findings above, without a single unproved hypothesis.
The remaining suspects
The others found their acquittal in the grid as well: Gavril the Farrier was at the tourney field; Pantelimon the Gardener was at the merchant's house. Every one of these rows was necessary: take out a single one and the verdict can no longer be demonstrated.
The dossier is closed, but the method stays open to anyone with the patience to count cells.
