The Hour of the Envoy
A bold theft has shaken the calm of the court, and calm will not return until the truth comes out. The culprit worked cleanly, but not without witnesses — and the witnesses, at last, have begun to talk. The testimonies keep returning to the same names: Pantelimon the Gardener, Costache the Toll-Keeper, Chancellor Veniamin and Father Nicodim. The hours in question: "at dawn", "after matins", "at noon" and "at dusk". A sharp eye is not enough here — it takes an archivist's patience: fit everything together, then pronounce your verdict.

He hears the confessions of the whole court. Forgetting, he says, is a gift from the Lord - one he sells dearly.

Locations
Sealed crates, thick ledgers, and air that smells of undeclared goods.
Cells abandoned since the new dungeon was built. "Abandoned" is one way of putting it.
It smells of hay and hurried departures. Horses give no testimony.
The stretch of wall the patrol skirts when the wind blows. Everyone knows that.
Objects
Heavy, old, its teeth worn smooth. No one knows what door it opens anymore - or so they say.
It sounds the muster, the alarm, or the retreat. Whoever holds it can start a whole panic with a single breath.
Light, accurate, with a walnut stock. Exactly one bolt is missing from the quiver.
Three padlocks, two rows of straps. Fresh scratches around the hinges, not the locks.
Moments
When the citadel is barely waking and the guards still doze.
The hour after the morning service, when the abbey empties.
Midday, with bustle in the markets and silence in the alcoves.
When the shadows lengthen and the lanterns are not yet lit.
