Chronicle of the solution: The Enigma of the Court
Disappearance Tier I
What had been made invisible was found, and whoever hid it answers for it today. Here is the road there.
The dossier as it reached the desk
Since matins, a strange emptiness has walked the citadel: what stood in its place yesterday is gone today. Open searches have brought nothing; the time has come for questions asked aslant. The testimonies keep returning to the same names: Zaharia the Spice Merchant, Sava the Bell-Ringer and Ilinca the Baker. The places named in the testimonies — the Golden Boar inn, the queen's garden and the tourney field — each await their turn under scrutiny. Study the testimonies at your leisure, fit them into the grid, and pronounce your verdict without haste.
Brought before the Chancellery were Zaharia the Spice Merchant, Sava the Bell-Ringer and Ilinca the Baker — names that, until the grid's last row, weighed exactly the same.
The suspects
-
Zaharia the Spice Merchant
His ships bring pepper, saffron, and news no one asked for. All of it at the same price: steep.
1.74 m tall · dark eyes · black hair · right-handed
-
Sava the Bell-Ringer
He has rung the cathedral bells on the hour for thirty years. He sees the whole city from above and forgives nothing he sees.
1.83 m tall · brown eyes · greying hair · right-handed
-
Ilinca the Baker
She weighs flour to the gram and people at a glance. No one stays in her debt twice.
1.62 m tall · brown eyes · chestnut hair · right-handed
Locations
-
The Golden Boar inn
Wine watered down and rumours diluted with nothing. The rooms upstairs ask no questions.
-
The queen's garden
Roses trimmed to a line and paths you may walk only by invitation. At night, the hedge has ears.
-
The tourney field
Empty stands outside festival days. An excellent place for meetings that never happened.
The evidence gathered on file
Nothing is missing from the list and nothing is surplus. Every row below is necessary: without it, the grid would allow several solutions at once.
- The gate guard swears: the suspect with black hair was at the tourney field.
- Even the jester says it in earnest: Sava the Bell-Ringer never set foot in the place where the rooms upstairs ask no questions.
- Every scout reports the same about the culprit: the culprit was in the place where the hedge has ears.
Break the seal: the Chancellery's reasoning — warning: past this line, the mystery ends
The reasoning, step by step
No confession was wrung from anyone here. Only the grid was drawn tighter, until nothing but a single name still fitted inside it.
This particular came to light as well: “The gate guard swears: the suspect with black hair was at the tourney field”. The cell filled, and around it a space opened: that is what a certain match does to a grid.
Then this finding entered the file: “Even the jester says it in earnest: Sava the Bell-Ringer never set foot in the place where the rooms upstairs ask no questions”. A cross in the grid seems little, but every cross brings the row nearer the moment when one cell alone is left free.
A detail overlooked at the start came back into the file: “Every scout reports the same about the culprit: the culprit was in the place where the hedge has ears”. One attribute of the culprit, no more. Enough, though, to leave on the list only whoever has it.
The verdict
The name the grid could no longer force out of the circle is Sava the Bell-Ringer. When the deed took place, Sava the Bell-Ringer was at the queen's garden. Nothing was assumed along the way; every step can be redone with a pencil on paper.
The remaining suspects
The remaining suspects received their release from the grid too: Zaharia the Spice Merchant was at the tourney field; Ilinca the Baker was at the Golden Boar inn. They look like rows of padding and they are not: the whole of the rest rests on them.
The file sits on its shelf today, tied with red cord. What is worth keeping from it is not the culprit's name but the road: every step verifiable, none of them guessed.
