A Short History of Logic Puzzles

The grid you fill in today has illustrious ancestors: Greek philosophers, a scholar at Charlemagne's court, a Victorian mathematician with a fondness for nonsense, puzzle magazines, and a riddle the whole world wrongly attributes to Einstein. Here is the family tree.
Antiquity: the machinery of certainty
Long before anyone drew a grid, Aristotle built the machine it runs on: the syllogism. "All men are mortal; Socrates is a man; therefore Socrates is mortal" — two premises forcing a conclusion, whether you like it or not. Every cross and tick you place is a tiny syllogism; the deduction grid is simply thousands of them, kept in good order.
A riddle at Charlemagne's court
Around the year 800, the scholar Alcuin of York — schoolmaster to Charlemagne's empire — is credited with a collection called Propositiones ad acuendos iuvenes, "Problems to sharpen the young". In it lives one of the most famous riddles ever told: a traveller must ferry a wolf, a goat and a cabbage across a river in a boat that holds only one of them at a time. It is pure constraint-reasoning, a thousand years before the word existed — and proof that the medieval world, where Enigmerra makes its home, took its puzzles seriously.
Lewis Carroll teaches logic to play
The author of Alice in Wonderland was, by trade, the Oxford mathematician Charles Dodgson. Under his pen name, Lewis Carroll published The Game of Logic (1886) and Symbolic Logic (1896), turning chains of syllogisms into parlour amusement — absurd premises about cats, bores and kangaroos that resolve, inexorably, into one conclusion. Carroll grasped the great secret of the genre: rigour is more fun when it wears a costume.
1962: the zebra crosses the street
On 17 December 1962, the magazine Life International printed a puzzle with five houses of five colours, five nationalities, five drinks, five cigarette brands and five pets, ending with the questions: who drinks water, and who owns the zebra? Legend soon attributed it to Albert Einstein — with no evidence whatsoever. The "zebra puzzle" is the direct ancestor of the modern logic grid: several categories, one bijection, a unique solution reached purely by elimination. Any Enigmerra investigator would feel at home in it.
The magazine era and the liars' island
Through the middle of the twentieth century, American puzzle magazines — Dell foremost among them — made "logic problems" a household genre and popularized the cross-hatched elimination grid you know today. Meanwhile the logician Raymond Smullyan populated an island with knights who always tell the truth and knaves who always lie, in books like What Is the Name of This Book? (1978). If that arrangement sounds familiar, it should: Enigmerra's Supreme Law — the culprit always lies, everyone else tells the truth — is a daughter of Smullyan's island, with a crime attached.
A detour through numbers
In 1979, an American architect named Howard Garns published a number-placement puzzle called "Number Place" in a Dell magazine. Japan's puzzle house Nikoli adopted it in 1984 and gave it the name that conquered the planet: sudoku. When Wayne Gould convinced The Times of London to print one in 2004, the ensuing craze taught millions of people the pleasure Enigmerra is built on — the click of a cell that can only be one thing.
The daily ritual
The last ingredient is the calendar. Newspaper crosswords made the daily puzzle a ritual generations ago, and the Wordle wave of 2022 proved the formula eternal: one puzzle a day, the same for everyone, gone tomorrow.
