The Silence of the Seal
Someone slipped poison where it did not belong, and now the whole court eyes its goblets warily. Between remedy and venom runs a thin line, and someone at court crossed it knowingly. Suspicion has fallen on Lady Ruxandra, Mother Evghenia, Luca the Squire, Zaharia the Spice Merchant and Abbot Corvus — and until the proof is plain, none of these names leaves the room. Motives abound — ambition, the inheritance, greed, blackmail and a debt of honour — yet only one moved the guilty hand. A sharp eye is not enough here — it takes an archivist's patience: fit everything together, then pronounce your verdict.
Suspects
The queen's shadow at every hour. She hears everything, sees everything, and embroiders all she learns into patterns known only to her.

He polishes the knight's armour and dreams of a sword of his own. For a coat of arms he would do almost anything.

His ships bring pepper, saffron, and news no one asked for. All of it at the same price: steep.

Locations
Wine watered down and rumours diluted with nothing. The rooms upstairs ask no questions.
The royal cabin in the heart of the forest. Far from the eyes of the court - which is exactly what suits some.
The stretch of wall the patrol skirts when the wind blows. Everyone knows that.
Barrels as big as carts and corners the lantern never reaches.
The highest point of the fortress. From here you see everything - and from below, everyone sees who climbs up.
Objects
Heavy, old, its teeth worn smooth. No one knows what door it opens anymore - or so they say.
Copper pans, sealed weights. One of the weights rings hollow.
The crest has been filed away almost completely. Almost.
Orderly rows of meaningless signs. The ink is costly, the paper costlier, the sender - unknown.
An old weapon, forgotten on the rack. The rust on the blade is newer than it looks.
Motives
ambition
Setea de a urca, chiar peste trupuri, spre o treaptă mai înaltă.
the inheritance
O avere așteptată, pe care numai o moarte o desparte de mână.
greed
Dorința nesățioasă de avere, care nu se oprește la nimic.
blackmail
Un secret ținut ca funia la gât, strâns exact cât trebuie.
a debt of honour
O făgăduială care cântărește mai greu decât viața.
Moments
When the citadel is barely waking and the guards still doze.
The hour after the morning service, when the abbey empties.
Midday, with bustle in the markets and silence in the alcoves.
When the shadows lengthen and the lanterns are not yet lit.
At the evening service, when the bells drown out any footstep.

Verdict
The culprit always lies; everyone else tells the truth.
- In the Chancellery's ledger it stands in black and white: Zaharia the Spice Merchant was at the watchtower.
- The gate guard swears: Mother Evghenia was driven by greed.
- An honest-faced witness saw it plainly: the ciphered letter and greed go together.
- The gate guard swears: the ciphered letter matches that hour: at vespers.
- The Chancellery checked twice: a debt of honour does not match that hour: at noon.
- Every scout reports the same about the culprit: the culprit was at the castle cellar.
- By the order of the hours, first comes Abbot Corvus, then the suspect with blond hair.
- The gate guard swears: the signet ring and blackmail go together.
- Before the investigator, Abbot Corvus firmly repeats: "I was driven by the inheritance".
- The bell-ringer remembers well: Lady Ruxandra came earlier than the suspect with green eyes.
- In the Chancellery's ledger it stands in black and white: the hunting lodge and the rusted sword go together.
- By the order of the hours, first comes Luca the Squire, then Zaharia the Spice Merchant.
- Whatever the market gossips: the Golden Boar inn and greed do not go together.
- Two witnesses, upon their crest: Zaharia the Spice Merchant never touched the signet ring.
- A note in the margin of the ledger: if Zaharia the Spice Merchant handled the customs scales, then Zaharia the Spice Merchant was driven by the inheritance.
- The chronicler notes drily: ambition matches that hour: after matins, whatever the court may say.
- The customs register is clear: the watchtower and the bronze key do not go together.
