The Signature of the Night

An absence has fallen upon the court heavier than any presence: the disappearance can no longer be denied. Open searches have brought nothing; the time has come for questions asked aslant. On the Chancellery's list stand Father Nicodim, Onufrie the Executioner, Castellan Ursu, Luca the Squire and Sava the Bell-Ringer; one of these names covers a lie. As for the impulse behind it, the court whispers of everything: fear of exposure, a debt of honour, blackmail, revenge and the inheritance. The threads were tangled on purpose: investigate, weigh every word, and pronounce your verdict only when the grid leaves no room for doubt.

Verdict

The culprit always lies; everyone else tells the truth.

Clues & testimonies
  1. A maid whispered it at confession: the queen's garden and the silver-clad icon go together.
  2. Even the jester says it in earnest: the locked chest and the inheritance do not go together.
  3. The chronicler notes drily: the silver-clad icon matches that hour: at dawn, whatever the court may say.
  4. An unsigned note, slipped under the door: "the culprit was driven by a debt of honour".
  5. The night watch saw the suspect with blue eyes first, and only then Sava the Bell-Ringer.
  6. The tracks in the dust do not lie: fear of exposure matches that hour: at noon.
  7. The chronicler notes drily: Luca the Squire was at the north wall, whatever the court may say.
  8. The night watch saw Father Nicodim first, and only then Onufrie the Executioner.
  9. An honest-faced witness saw it plainly: the herald's horn matches that hour: at noon.
  10. The gate guard swears: the salt market and revenge go together.
  11. One thing is certain: the salt market and the hour "at vespers" do not share the same match for suspects.
  12. In the Chancellery's ledger it stands in black and white: the north wall and the inheritance go together.
  13. The chronicler notes drily: the wharf matches that hour: at dusk, whatever the court may say.
  14. The chronicler notes drily: the silver-clad icon and a debt of honour go together, whatever the court may say.
  15. The Chancellery checked twice: the suspect with blue eyes never set foot in the place where the hedge has ears.
  16. The tracks in the dust do not lie: Onufrie the Executioner handled the hunting crossbow.
