The dossier as it reached the desk
Something more bitter than gall found its way to the court's table today: poison. The dose was measured with care — enough not to look like chance, too little to go unpunished. The testimonies keep returning to the same names: Lady Ruxandra, Chancellor Veniamin and Captain Vlaicu. Rumor walks the deed through every corner: the castle cellar, the old chapel and the merchant's house. The findings and the testimonies
Here is the whole file, as the investigator received it. Not one row is spare — it was checked by removing each in turn and watching the unique solution disappear.

The unravelling of the thread
The investigation ran contrary to suspicion: it did not ask who could have, it cut away, row by row, whoever could not.
There followed a detail that narrowed the circle: “The gate guard swears: Lady Ruxandra was at the merchant's house”. Once the tick was placed, the investigation had nothing left to argue on that row and moved on.
The examination of the place yielded this as well: “An unsigned note, slipped under the door: "the culprit was at the castle cellar"”. The fact stuck to the guilty party like a seal, and whoever did not bear the seal was left in peace.
This page was stitched into the file too: “The customs register is clear: Chancellor Veniamin never set foot in the old chapel”. A cell is struck out, and with it a whole possibility that until then looked as good as any other.
The close of the investigation
The Chancellery closed the dossier with a single name written on it: Chancellor Veniamin. The grid shows plainly how matters stood: Chancellor Veniamin was at the castle cellar. Nothing in this verdict rests on supposition: every row comes out of the grid.
Where the others were
The remaining suspects received their release from the grid too: Lady Ruxandra was at the merchant's house; Captain Vlaicu was at the old chapel. They look like rows of padding and they are not: the whole of the rest rests on them.
The truth did not surface in a flash of insight but out of a run of small cuts, every one of them checkable.
