The Secret of Vespers
A spy has crept in among the people of the court, and the realm's secrets have begun flowing toward foreign ears. The Chancellery has caught only the end of the thread; the whole skein is still in someone's hands. Suspicion has fallen on Manole the Jeweller, Chancellor Veniamin, Costache the Toll-Keeper and Mother Evghenia — and until the proof is plain, none of these names leaves the room. The hours in question: "at dawn", "after matins", "at noon" and "at dusk". The threads were tangled on purpose: investigate, weigh every word, and pronounce your verdict only when the grid leaves no room for doubt.

His scales weigh the goods; his eye, the merchant. Both can be "greased" at need.

Locations
Thousands of leather-bound tomes. Some of the chains on the shelves were cut recently.
Barrels as big as carts and corners the lantern never reaches.
Roses trimmed to a line and paths you may walk only by invitation. At night, the hedge has ears.
Slanted desks, ink, and working silence. Here a quill creaks louder than a conscience.
Objects
New coins, unworn, from a minting not yet in circulation. Interesting.
Beads of golden resin strung on a silk thread. The thread is broken and hastily reknotted.
Whoever holds it can seal any decree. Which is why it should not be wandering the kingdom.
The kingdom's borders, drawn with a fresh correction where there should be none.
Moments
When the citadel is barely waking and the guards still doze.
The hour after the morning service, when the abbey empties.
Midday, with bustle in the markets and silence in the alcoves.
When the shadows lengthen and the lanterns are not yet lit.

Verdict
The culprit always lies; everyone else tells the truth.
- The bell-ringer remembers well: Costache the Toll-Keeper came earlier than the shortest suspect.
- The tracks in the dust do not lie: Manole the Jeweller was there at dawn.
- The gate guard swears: the castle cellar and the purse of gold coins go together.
- An honest-faced witness saw it plainly: the purse of gold coins matches that hour: at noon.
- At the Chancellery, Mother Evghenia maintains: "I was in the place where the hedge has ears".
- Chancellor Veniamin raises their right hand and says: "I was there at dusk".
- In the Chancellery's ledger it stands in black and white: Costache the Toll-Keeper was at the abbey library.
- The tracks in the dust do not lie: the shortest suspect handled the royal seal.
- The hounds caught no scent at all: the amber necklace does not match that hour: after matins.
