Chronicle of the solution: The Hour of the Lady

Espionage Tier III

The spy has been caught, and the thread they left behind is unwound below, from one end to the other.

The opening of the investigation

A ciphered letter, found where it had no business being, put the Chancellery on alert: someone is prying for another crown. The spy knows the corridors better than the guards do — an ill sign: it is one of the household. On the Chancellery's list stand Codrin the Huntsman, Margica the Innkeeper, Sword-Bearer Dragos and Father Nicodim; one of these names covers a lie. The hours in question: "at dawn", "after matins", "at noon" and "at dusk". Few files have tested so many investigators; untangle the threads, catch the lie, and pronounce your verdict.

An espionage dossier with an hour named in its title tells you, before you have even opened it, where the difficulty lies: not in what was learned but in when. The news left the realm within a short interval, and that interval is all the Chancellery has.

The four suspects are people who move about a great deal. Codrin the Huntsman ranges the forest. Sword-Bearer Dragos carries his lord's sword and goes wherever his lord goes. Margica the Innkeeper stays put, but the whole world passes before her. Father Nicodim moves little, yet everyone comes to him, which amounts to the same.

The places: the merchant's house, the great stable, the guild forge and the customs cellar — four places of work, none of rest. The objects: an ermine cloak, a signet ring, a rusted sword and a bronze key.

Tier III. The testimonies are the key to this dossier, and one of them is false. Do not begin with it; begin with whatever can contradict it.

Suspicion settled on these: Codrin the Huntsman, Margica the Innkeeper, Sword-Bearer Dragos and Father Nicodim. From then on the names mattered less than what could be proved about each.

The pages of the file

This much the investigation had at its disposal, not a line more. The set is minimal by construction — remove any of the rows below and the dossier becomes unsolvable again.

  1. The chronicler notes drily: the signet ring matches that hour: at dawn, whatever the court may say.
  2. The tracks in the dust do not lie: the customs cellar and the rusted sword go together.
  3. A maid whispered it at confession: the suspect with dark eyes handled the signet ring.
  4. At the Chancellery, Sword-Bearer Dragos maintains: "I handled the rusted sword".
  5. The tracks in the dust do not lie: Father Nicodim was at the great stable.
  6. Codrin the Huntsman declares under oath: "I was there after matins".
  7. The gate guard swears: the suspect with blue eyes handled the ermine cloak.
  8. The tracks in the dust do not lie: Sword-Bearer Dragos was in the place with more secret drawers than drawers.
  9. The Chancellery checked twice: Sword-Bearer Dragos was not present at dusk.

The road to the verdict

The start was not a culprit hunted by candlelight but whatever could be proved. The rest followed of itself, by cutting.

The gate register had kept a trace of its own: “The chronicler notes drily: the signet ring matches that hour: at dawn, whatever the court may say”. Once the tick was placed, the investigation had nothing left to argue on that row and moved on.

This particular came to light as well: “The tracks in the dust do not lie: the customs cellar and the rusted sword go together”. A certain match thus enters the grid, and its row and column empty at once of every other possibility.

The scouts brought their share as well: “A maid whispered it at confession: the suspect with dark eyes handled the signet ring”. A pair was tied, and the knot dragged a whole handful of impossibilities after it.

Then came, one after another, the findings that drew the noose tight: “At the Chancellery, Sword-Bearer Dragos maintains: "I handled the rusted sword"”; “The tracks in the dust do not lie: Father Nicodim was at the great stable”; “Codrin the Huntsman declares under oath: "I was there after matins"”; “The gate guard swears: the suspect with blue eyes handled the ermine cloak”. The investigation needed nothing further; what remained read itself.

The examination of the place yielded this as well: “The tracks in the dust do not lie: Sword-Bearer Dragos was in the place with more secret drawers than drawers”. One more certainty means, in a deduction grid, a whole fistful of impossibilities — and so it proved here.

A report from the watch brought clarity: “The Chancellery checked twice: Sword-Bearer Dragos was not present at dusk”. A well-proved “no” is worth, in an investigation, ten suspicions.

The lying testimony

The lie came to light by its plain failure to fit. Sword-Bearer Dragos swore before the Chancellery that I handled the rusted sword, yet everything that could be proved shows the opposite: Sword-Bearer Dragos never touched the rusted sword. Under the Supreme Law that failure to fit is the culprit's own signature.

The seal on the file

The verdict wrote itself — the culprit is Sword-Bearer Dragos. The row in the grid says it all: Sword-Bearer Dragos was at the merchant's house, handled the bronze key and was there at noon. Plain elimination was not enough here: every suspect had to be tried as the culprit until all hypotheses but one shattered. Hence the dossier stands at tier III.

What became of the others

And here is what had become of the others, in that same hour: Codrin the Huntsman was at the customs cellar, handled the rusted sword and was there after matins; Margica the Innkeeper was at the guild forge, handled the signet ring and was there at dawn; Father Nicodim was at the great stable, handled the ermine cloak and was there at dusk. Every one of these rows was necessary: take out a single one and the verdict can no longer be demonstrated.

It was not cleverness that unravelled the thread, but order. Order can be learned, and that is exactly why the chronicle is written.

Nothing in this chronicle is invented: the text rises out of the dossier's logic, and the dossier passed through the solver before publication, so that its solution is provably unique. behind the scenes at the Chancellery.
