Chronicle of the solution: The Enigma of the Envoy
Espionage Tier II
The espionage file has found its answer; what follows is the chronicle of it, written for those who come after us.
What the file said when it was opened
A ciphered letter, found where it had no business being, put the Chancellery on alert: someone is prying for another crown. What has leaked so far is hard to weigh; what might yet leak, impossible. Before you, one by one, will stand Iustin the Mariner, Ban Radu the Silent, Luca the Squire and Filip the Steward. The places named in the testimonies — the guild forge, the throne room, the great stable and the wharf — each await their turn under scrutiny. Open the grid, weigh every clue, and pronounce your verdict: the Chancellery awaits only your signature.
The circle closed around these names: Iustin the Mariner, Ban Radu the Silent, Luca the Squire and Filip the Steward. The investigation was not permitted to step outside it, and had no need to.
The suspects
-
Iustin the Mariner
He brings goods from ports with unpronounceable names. Half the cargo never appears in the customs records.
1.78 m tall · blue eyes · black hair · left-handed
-
Ban Radu the Silent
He has never uttered a needless word in his life. Sadly, nor a useful one for investigators.
1.81 m tall · grey eyes · grey hair · right-handed
-
Luca the Squire
He polishes the knight's armour and dreams of a sword of his own. For a coat of arms he would do almost anything.
1.72 m tall · green eyes · brown hair · right-handed
-
Filip the Steward
He counts the crown's silver every evening. On some evenings the count comes out different - and he says nothing.
1.79 m tall · grey eyes · chestnut hair · right-handed
Locations
-
The guild forge
Anvils, tongs, and a fire that never goes out. Many small metal things vanish here.
-
The throne room
Gold, purple, and the most closely watched place in the kingdom. In theory.
-
The great stable
It smells of hay and hurried departures. Horses give no testimony.
-
The wharf
Moored boats, wet ropes, and goods that prefer to arrive in the fog.
Objects
-
The vial of belladonna
A small flask, a wax stopper, a label written with care. Three-quarters empty.
-
The map of the realm
The kingdom's borders, drawn with a fresh correction where there should be none.
-
The ermine cloak
White fur with black tails - only the royal family may wear it. It has a tear at the hem.
-
The purse of gold coins
New coins, unworn, from a minting not yet in circulation. Interesting.
Moments
-
At dawn
When the citadel is barely waking and the guards still doze.
-
After matins
The hour after the morning service, when the abbey empties.
-
At noon
Midday, with bustle in the markets and silence in the alcoves.
-
At dusk
When the shadows lengthen and the lanterns are not yet lit.
The testimonies on file
This much was worked with, no more and no less. Minimality is not a figure of speech: each row was taken out in turn, at trial, and without it the solution ceased to be unique.
- In the Chancellery's ledger it stands in black and white: the throne room matches that hour: after matins.
- The gate guard swears: the great stable matches that hour: at dusk.
- The healer says it with a raised finger: if Ban Radu the Silent was at the throne room, then Luca the Squire was there at dusk.
- A maid whispered it at confession: the wharf matches that hour: at dawn.
- The tracks in the dust do not lie: the great stable and the ermine cloak go together.
- Whatever the market gossips: the left-handed suspect was not present at noon.
- In the Chancellery's ledger it stands in black and white: the suspect with grey hair handled the purse of gold coins.
- An unsigned note, slipped under the door: "the culprit handled the vial of belladonna".
- In the Chancellery's ledger it stands in black and white: the map of the realm matches that hour: at dawn.
- A maid whispered it at confession: the suspect with grey hair was there after matins.

The reasoning, step by step
The Chancellery does not work with impressions. It works with a grid in which every cell has exactly one answer, and with the patience to find it.
There followed a detail that narrowed the circle: “In the Chancellery's ledger it stands in black and white: the throne room matches that hour: after matins”. From then on that cell could no longer be disputed, and the dispute moved one row down.
The archivist underlined the following line with his nail: “The gate guard swears: the great stable matches that hour: at dusk”. The cell filled, and around it a space opened: that is what a certain match does to a grid.
This too was added to the file: “The healer says it with a raised finger: if Ban Radu the Silent was at the throne room, then Luca the Squire was there at dusk”. Here patience was needed: this line did no work until others had prepared the ground for it.
Then came, one after another, the findings that drew the noose tight: “A maid whispered it at confession: the wharf matches that hour: at dawn”; “The tracks in the dust do not lie: the great stable and the ermine cloak go together”; “Whatever the market gossips: the left-handed suspect was not present at noon”; “In the Chancellery's ledger it stands in black and white: the suspect with grey hair handled the purse of gold coins”; “An unsigned note, slipped under the door: "the culprit handled the vial of belladonna"”. The investigation needed nothing further; what remained read itself.
The next line was the one that changed the reckoning: “In the Chancellery's ledger it stands in black and white: the map of the realm matches that hour: at dawn”. A pair was tied, and the knot dragged a whole handful of impossibilities after it.
This page was stitched into the file too: “A maid whispered it at confession: the suspect with grey hair was there after matins”. A certain match thus enters the grid, and its row and column empty at once of every other possibility.
The close of the investigation
The verdict wrote itself — the culprit is Filip the Steward. The row in the grid says it all: Filip the Steward was at the guild forge, handled the vial of belladonna and was there at noon. Nothing in this verdict rests on supposition: every row comes out of the grid.
What became of the others
The remaining suspects received their release from the grid too: Iustin the Mariner was at the wharf, handled the map of the realm and was there at dawn; Ban Radu the Silent was at the throne room, handled the purse of gold coins and was there after matins; Luca the Squire was at the great stable, handled the ermine cloak and was there at dusk. It is these acquittals that made the verdict possible: without them, room for doubt would have remained.
It was not cleverness that unravelled the thread, but order. Order can be learned, and that is exactly why the chronicle is written.
